Education

Team SAGE helps scholar-athletes build the academic foundation, confidence, discipline, and college awareness needed to thrive in school and beyond.

The SAGE approach

Sound mind. Sound body. Strong future.

Education is not an add-on to Team SAGE athletics. It is the foundation of the program.

Scholar-athletes receive support designed to strengthen classroom performance, improve decision-making, prepare for college, and develop the personal accountability required for long-term success.

Team SAGE combines tutoring, mentoring, workshops, grade-point expectations, college exposure, health education, financial literacy, and organized sports into one connected experience.

Academic commitment

What every scholar-athlete is expected to build

Educational support

Tools that help students move forward

Team SAGE surrounds scholar-athletes with practical academic and personal-development resources.

01

Professional tutoring

Structured academic support helps students strengthen core subjects, complete assignments, and remain accountable for their grades.

02

College preparation

Students gain exposure to admissions requirements, standardized-test preparation, scholarships, majors, and college-selection strategies.

03

College visits

Campus visits help scholar-athletes visualize themselves in higher education and understand the opportunities available to them.

04

Mentoring

Peer and professional mentors reinforce confidence, leadership, academic responsibility, career awareness, and sound judgment.

05

Community service

Service activities teach civic responsibility and encourage students to become positive contributors in their neighborhoods.

06

Health and wellness

Education in nutrition, fitness, relationships, peer pressure, and personal responsibility supports the whole scholar-athlete.

07

Financial literacy

A financial literacy curriculum utilizes Being Brilliant on the Basics and its accompanying Study Guide by Wornel Simpson to help participants build practical money skills, sound decision-making, accountability, and long-term thinking.

Student pathway

From academic support to college readiness

Assess

Identify academic strengths, challenges, and support needs.

Support

Connect students with tutoring, mentoring, and workshops.

Monitor

Track grades, attendance, effort, conduct, and progress.

Expose

Introduce colleges, careers, professionals, and new experiences.

Prepare

Build the habits and knowledge needed for graduation and college.

Academic standard

Achievement with accountability

Team SAGE historically required tutoring for players who were not maintaining the program’s academic standard. This approach reinforced the message that participation, discipline, and academic effort belong together.

College-ready direction

Preparing students for university eligibility

The program helps students understand the academic pathway needed to become competitive applicants for colleges, universities, and scholarship opportunities.

2026 Initiative

Financial Literacy Initiative

Beginning in 2026, Team SAGE is expanding its scholar-athlete development model with a financial literacy curriculum utilizing Being Brilliant on the Basics and its accompanying Study Guide by Wornel Simpson. Each participant receives the book and study guide as educational resources.

Court-side chats

Connecting money principles to on-court principles

Through court-side chats, participants connect practical financial literacy principles with lessons learned through athletics — discipline, preparation, consistency, accountability, decision-making, and long-term thinking — helping them make stronger choices about money, education, careers, and their future.

Life-skills education

Learning that extends beyond the classroom

Team SAGE workshops have addressed practical issues affecting students, families, health, relationships, and future success.
